Lego Programming

I was on Moobag.com the other day when I ran across this idea

“why isn’t there a programming language that
is completely visual. Like coding with legos.”

The whole idea is here. What a cool idea, I thought. This is definitely something that can only be created by an open source community. If someone like Microsoft took this over or even the good guys at Apple something just wouldn’t work about it.

Microsoft would likely make it only work on the Windows platform and maybe even IE. Mac would probably get closer to a lego-like programming language but it probably wouldn’t be flexible or practical enough to do anything really meaningful.

So, open source community, how about it? For starters forget about making it work on the desktop, make it only for web browsers. Next, don’t build it on top of Java. Java’s OK but there is always something about it that inconveniences people: they don’t have the correct version on their computer or browser, they need to wait for it to finish loading, they have it turned off… something. Actually that list can get pretty long.

It seems in fact that the way to make the Web really take off is to make it so that just about anyone can build an application without any more effort than it would take to build a car out of Legos.
